There is only 1 session available for February. I'm currently taking bookings for March (and onwards)

Also a little reminder that family sessions are not available in December, so make sure you book your session so you can have your fantastic photos ready for next year's Christmas gifts! Nothing like planning ahead!

Blue Mountains Newborn Photography - Little Baby Riley

The first newborn of the year!

Little Riley was almost 4 weeks old when he came to see me this weekend. He was WIDE awake when he arrived, but (as newborns do) got sleepy very quickly, which was just perfect!

His Mummy and Daddy have decorated his bedroom completely in giraffe decor. So it was only fitting that we did a shoot with his GIANT giraffe to frame for his room.

My first session of 2012 came right after almost a week of fairly heavy rain.

We were so glad to see the sun this day, it was fantastic! It was still pretty wet under foot, but we made do in a pretty park in Blackheath.

I just wanted to wish all my beautiful clients and blog readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I'm excited to see what 2012 will bring for us as a family and also for my little business. I have a few big and new things planned and lots of bookings already for the beginning of the year. So check in regularly here, or for quicker and more recent info become a fan on Facebook.

Just a little PSA. January is very full with bookings right now, I'm happy to fit you in if you need a session in an honest emergency (or if we need to reschedule a booking already made because of rain). Otherwise please look to February for the next available bookings.

You might remember little Emily from a few months ago. Louise and her little family wanted to grab some photos before Christmas, so them being my last session for 2011 was perfect!

We met at The Rhododendron Gardens in Blackheath, as it was where Louise and Dave had their wedding photos. It was raining all the way up until the morning of our shoot together, and so by the afternoon, the sun was shining and it was the perfect place and the perfect weather for some shots around the beautiful gardens.

Sydney Wedding Photographer - Cath and Mark (Willy)

I was STOKED to meet up with Cath and Mark (from HERE) again.

Their wedding was held at Q Station in Manly. It was one of the most beautiful and versatile locations I have ever seen!

After some pre wedding photos of the girls getting ready, we headed to the pier for the ceremony. It was beautiful and we even had a boat glide by to take a look!

After the ceremony Cath and Willy had a quick drink with their guests at the bar, and then we headed off to take a look at some fantastic places to shoot some bridal party photos.

My favorite place (and Will actually asked if we could get some photos in here) was the old hospital building... it was CREEPY!!!!!

Last weekend I took a beautiful drive out to Oberon (about 1 hour 10 minutes from Katoomba)

It was a beautiful drive, and when I arrived as the directions told me, I was at a park called "The Common" It was an outstandingly beautiful place, I was just so overwhelmed by how pretty it was.

This afternoon I had the pleasure of two sessions, both were with some of the most lovely people! The first shoot, I had the chance to photograph one of my dearest friends and her beautiful family. I had the absolute honor of being at my beautiful friend Lusi Austin's home birth (view pictures here)

We had a lovely time, and (at Lusi's suggestion... HONEST!!!) we went and had the shoot out the front of the council chambers, which (for facebook friends) you know is somewhere I've been DYING to have a family shoot!

What To Wear

I'm frequently asked...

"What should we wear to our shoot Mell? I'm totally lost!"

And my response is always this...

Try not to "match", try the word "coordinate" instead.

Tip 1) Help the most picky person choose first. If there is a small child, or someone who is particular about how clothes fit or feel, help them to choose something beautiful that they will feel most comfortable in. After this has happened, choose colours from the first outfit and go to town with everyone else. As base colours if you are stuck, I usually recommend Jeans/Blue and/or black to start out.

Tip 2) How many colours??? This all depends on the amount of people you are preparing for your shoot. There are some examples below, but I usually suggest not many more than 3 colours in a smaller family of say 5, but when you start heading up to extended family shoots like a few below, then 4-5 colours or shades usually work out fine.

Tip 3) Layer, layer, layer! Shoots always look fantastic, not only when the beautiful people in them are coordinating, but also when they layer their colours. T-shirts with collars, vests and jackets with a scarf and some fancy boots... the more layers you have, the more fantastic your shoot will look!

Tip 4) Layer layer layer... but my shoot is in summer! If your shoot happens to come in warmer weather, don't worry about layering up and feel like you are in a sauna. Choose fantastic accessories like necklaces and hair clips, the possibilities are endless!

All of my clients look fantastic in their shoots, but I have chosen a few examples of larger families who rocked their session with their choice of outfits. Note that nobody "matches" yet everyone looks so fantastic together!

The Sutton shoot was great because they chose three main colours and accented with black. They used my layering tip, which was easy as it was a cooler day for their winter shoot. Mum picked blue, green and purple, and managed to get the boys in the same shirt, but different colours, and same for the little girls... great work Mum!

This adorable family didn't ask for my assistance, but they looked fantastic together anyway! Another shoot from a cool day where jackets and jumpers with great textures were able to be worn. Greys, blacks, and little girls in beautiful bright pink and baby pink... very sweet!

This is a great example of an extended family, from totally different places in the state, coming together on the day... and look what they pulled together!!!

I might let you know that this particular day was pouring with rain, and literally freezing cold. We powered though the session anyway, and I take my hat off to those family members who had short sleeves for the sake of looking great in the group shot!

Jeans, pale blue, green, and black/grey. They. look. AMAZING together!!!

The Barnes family was another big shoot that I had on another rainy day in Blackheath. They coordinated fabulously with jeans/blue, black, turquoise and reds. Great work guys!!!

And the final example for todays entry, the Walker family from a shoot last weekend. Their aim was for a few black and white photos (a passion of mine too!) but in colour, they looked fantastic too! Emma chose turquoise, and blue for the majority of this shoot, but I love how the brown in little Amy's dress ties into their hair colour, and it's a little special that even all the girl's lip colour is very close.

So if you are looking for examples of how to dress for your session without looking like you accidentally wore the same outfit (how embarrassment!!!) then keep these tips in mind, and these examples of real life MMP families.

Blue Mountains Newborn Photographer - Baby Aurora 7 Days Old

If you remember this little bump from here, then you will be pleased to know that THIS beautiful baby girl was sleeping inside! I got to meet sweet little Aurora this morning in my mini studio. She was not really ready for a sleep (read: WIDE AWAKE) when her Mummy and Daddy arrived, but by the end of our time together, she was out like a light!

What a good girl!

Clare Kelaher's Family - Blue Mountains Family Photography

I had the chance this morning to photograph my biggest group yet outside a wedding! There were 23 people there all up, and the goal was to capture every possible combination we could possibly think of.

Clare contacted me quite a few months ago, and we settled on October 2nd, it was the one day that everyone could make it. To our dismay, as the day approached, the weather forecast wasn't good.

This group of beautiful people battled through wind, rain, and freezing cold (about 10 degrees, but if felt like mighty less!!!) and all with those fantastic smiles!

Clare, you did a magnificent job of getting everyone together to create these special images to look back on. You are my hero!

Let it be known that I am always ECSTATIC when a client asks for a chair photo... it sure makes me happy!

I had beautiful Joshua come and visit me this week (as well as Ryan - Newborn baby galore this week at MMP!) This is the 12 day old product of two very special people we know. He was the sleepiest thing I ever did see, and I think I got ONE photo of him awake (when normally getting them to sleep is the tricky part!)

Some lovely friends we have (from a lifetime ago) got in contact with me for some photos of their beautiful little newborn Ryan (GREAT NAME!!!) He was sleepy when they arrived, but wiggling, wrapping and contorting sure woke him up, and then he wouldn't have a bar of sleepy photos unless Mum or Dad were having a cuddle (who isn't happiest in Mum or Dad's arms???)

Blue Mountains Birth Photography - Meeting Ezekiel

I have had this yearning to photograph a birth for about a year now, any birth would have been wonderful, but I specifically wanted to aim for a home birth (and water preferably!)

One day as I was teaching a little photography course to some friends in my community, a very good friend of mine popped in with a question "Mell, will you photography our home birth?"

"OH MY GOSH.... YESSSSSSSS!!!" I said with tears in my eyes.

Months passed and I became more and more exited. Soon it was my dear friend Lusi's due date (we all know what due date means... rarely anything!!!)

Due date came, due date went.

Then, Monday 5th September 2011, I got a phone call, it was my dear friend Lusi's beautiful Mumma. "Mell, come now!"

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I arrived to the most peaceful and heartwarming place I think a baby could ever be born into.

Soon after I rolled up, Lusi hopped into the birthing pool and not long after, her fantastic midwife Hazel arrived.

She checked the heartbeat, and this was one happy, healthy baby who was just totally ready to enter this world!

There was family...

laughs...

prayer...

pain...

love and support...

and then...

a beautiful happy, healthy, squirming baby Ezekiel!!!!!!

you could tell he was one of the most wanted and loved little people ever! (but then... aren't they all :D)

Biggest sister Stassi was there for the whole birth, from go, to "hello"

Daddy enjoyed a beautiful little cuddle

Then we found out he was a whopping 3.9kg!!

Lusi and Brett, Stassi, Elijah, Ethan, Zippi and new baby Ezekiel, thank you for making me feel so welcome in your home for one of the most important days of your lives. I'll be in touch with your disc as soon as I can special friends xo

Blue Mountains Event Photographer - Sienna's Christening

I woke this morning and took a trip down the mountain to Emu Plains for the most jam packed hour shoot ever! I arrived at a beautiful art Gallery on the Nepean River and waited for my new friend Sienna and her Mum and Dad to arrive. We took some fantastic family photos and some portraits of just Sienna on her own.

Then we went home to get changed and ready for Sienna's Christening at a sweet little chapel in Emu Plains.

It was an adorable service with LOADS of beautiful family and friends (and LOTS of past Mell Mallin Photography clients too!!!) You know this little "Punk" is loved with so many grandparents, uncles and aunts about.

Oh my!!! Check out this beautiful 5 week old baby boy, Zeph. He is the first brother to THREE (count 'em) THREE little girls... What a special little blessing!

He was one of my "wide awake" newborns, you know the ones that can almost hold their head up (yep, I can say that because my FIRST was exactly the same!!!)

Zeph didn't really want to have sleepy photos, he wanted to wriggle and chat to me... it was so special!

All of my shoots hold a special place in my heart, this one in particular was a special little shoot.

This, is the Barnes family. James and Rosemary are very special to a lot of people, so when their eldest daughter called me to organize a special birthday gift for Rosemary, I jumped at the chance. James and Rosemary have 6 children, 3 children in laws, and 4 grandchildren, so this 15 person shoot was pretty special seeing as the goal was to get images of ALL of them together. Everyone looked fantastic, and in spite of the rain intruding about 15 minutes into our shoot, we were totally task oriented and managed all the combination photos that we wanted to capture!

Great work everyone!

And you look fabulous too!!!

P.S. For those looking to dress a large group for a shoot (or even a small group) I encourage you to choose a few colours that go well together and let everyone run with whatever is in their wardrobe. For this shoot the colours were Black, Jeans/Blue, Red and Turquoise... it gives everyone a chance to look fantastic together, but still wear what they are comfortable in!

This weekend I had the chance to get together with a past client and photograph her daughter Chelsea's Christening. Chelsea from HERE was such a good little girl on the day of her photos, so I was not shocked when she took to the water like a duck!

What a good little girl! She was an angel throughout!!!

I had a lovely (although mighty cold) morning while on location with Micah and his Mum and Dad.

I had never been to this location, but as a special request from "Mum and Dad" we took a look. It was just beautiful and I am encouraging a return visit for the wedding photos early next year!

I had the pleasure this morning of photographing a beautiful little family of boys. Christmas gifts for Grandparents were on order, and what Grandparent doesn't LOVE the gift of a photo??

Well with a beautiful and proud big brother like Callum, and his brand spankin' new twin brothers Noah and Jonah, these Grandparents are in for a treat!!!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Max and his Mummy and Daddy. In spite of the heat we had a lovely afternoon at Everglades while the beautiful canopies made the heat much more bearable.

I had the pleasure of tagging along to Gayann and Larry's elopement on Wednesday.

This couple were from the US and just A BLAST! Belly laughs galore!

The midday ceremony certainly was VERY hot and we all got a little fried, but after two days of rain and a foggy morning, we were all glad it cleared up, even if it was a little TOO hot!

Sheridan and Michael - 3rd October 2009

This weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Sheridan and Michael's wedding, and what a beauty it was! Sheridan's little touches were right through the whole wedding - you could just tell that great thought had been put into it!

'Plan A' was ditched before I arrived - Ceremony in the gardens of Norman Lindsay Gallery.

'Plan B' was JUST as awesome - held on the front porch of the Gallery with guests sitting off to each side... BEAUTIFUL!

Then, the rain stayed away for a moment while we got into the gardens for a few photos. And here is the blow away for the day... (Part of me wants this blown up big in MY house! Ha ha!)

There's something about it! Mind you, we were singing "Run Rabbit Run" through our heads for the rest of the afternoon!

And how lucky was this!?! The lovely ladies gave in to my battering eyelashes and allowed us into the gallery for some quick photos!!! No photography is allowed in the gallery, so we were all feeling a bit spesh!

Then on to the stunning reception at Springwood Bowling Club.

Thank you Sheridan and Michael for letting me share your special day! It was a BLAST!

A special day last weekend (12th Sept) saw the beautiful couple Tracey and Luke come together in a stunning ceremony in Leura with a small group of family to join in the celebrations.

THIS WEEK saw a really awesome shin dig down in Sydney with a larger group of family and friends at an absolutely AMAZING place called Breakfast Point. My gosh! We love the colour white, and this place... it was everywhere you turned. BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Congratulations again Tracey and Luke, it was really special to be a part of your big days.
